Yeah, it's a lot more emphasis on preserving people's privacy, at the cost of requiring that you use interests or comms to actively curate, well, communities of common interest.
FWIW, as someone who never left (and who in the past has participated in fandom events hosted on LJ/DW), I've never thought "love this!"-type comments vapid or tedious or undesirable! I've known a couple of published authors to do things like declare Comments Amnesty -- explicitly stating they won't reply to the comments in a particular post due to volume -- and I bet you could just as well adopt that as a blanket journal policy if you yourself dislike replying to such things :)
